芹沢銈介  Serizawa Keisuke

Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property)

Serizawa Keisuke was born in May 1895 in Shizuoka City. After graduating from the Department of Design at the Tokyo Higher Technical School (now Tokyo Institute of Technology), he returned to his hometown of Shizuoka. However, he was deeply impressed by the beauty of Okinawan Bingata dyeing, which led him to decide to become a dye artist. While deeply studying Bingata and traditional Japanese dyeing techniques, he created a unique world of stencil dyeing that involved everything from design and stencil carving to dyeing itself.

His work is characterized by bright color schemes, clear expression, and a generous artistic style, and it continues to be loved by many enthusiasts today.

In 1956, he was designated as a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property) for his "kata-ezome" (stencil dyeing), which elevated his fame. In 1976 and 1977, he was invited by the French government to hold a large-scale solo exhibition at the National Grand Palais in Paris, which was a great success and earned him international acclaim.
