佐々木苑子 Sasaki Sonoko
She became interested in dyeing and weaving in her mid-20s, studying at workshops in Shizuoka and the San'in region. She devoted herself to researching tsumugi weaving and kasuri (ikat), and developed a unique style by incorporating painted kasuri alongside the traditional straight-line, abstract kasuri patterns. Sasaki-sensei's designs, based on sketches, skillfully incorporate geometric patterns and painted kasuri.
In the creation of works like painted kasuri, the threads are laid out in the same manner as when woven, and designs are drawn over them using stencils to create the warp threads, employing the traditional technique of "seed thread kasuri."
In 2005, she was recognized as the second human national treasure for tsumugi weaving. In 2010, she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays.
