森口華弘  Moriguchi Kakou

Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property)

Moriguchi Kaho’s works boast an astonishing level of precision and sophisticated compositional beauty, while still utilizing the traditional technique of "hand-painted yuzen."
His yuzen pieces are not merely decorations, but works of art that resemble paintings. Bold yet delicate lines, meticulously calculated color harmony, and designs that exude dignity—these elements combine to make his works truly unique.

(In 1924, he became a disciple of the third generation of Kyoto’s yuzen master, Nakagawa Kaden, and studied traditional hand-painted yuzen techniques. He also studied Japanese painting under Hikita Yoshinuma, focusing on the refinement of his creative sensibility. In 1939, he became independent and established his own yuzen workshop.

In terms of technique, in addition to traditional hand-painted Kyoto yuzen methods such as the use of "itome-nori" (a technique for outlining patterns) and "seki-dashi" (color blocking), he developed a unique technique inspired by the beauty of "makie" lacquer art. His innovative application of makie techniques led to the creation of his own distinctive and deeply refined style of yuzen.)
